Typefaces

The VPL uses Bodoni (too formal and stately looking) and some type of san-serif typefaces. Their san-serif face which I don't know the name of it, resembles close to Gill Sans (dunno know if it's really Gill Sans). Either way, I've been using Trebuchet up until now as a typeface that showed modern friendliness. But, as one student put it, this default font for computers is too quiet for my survey. More oomph, please. Perhaps a rounded type? So I am looking at these choices for a more friendlier + fun appeal:

Some Pages from Online Survey

Sorry if my postings are slow. Haven't been on Blogspot as much.

Oh yeah, the typeface here is temporary because my computer doesn't have such a wide range of fonts. I'll replace it with something else soon as I'm at school.

Image 1: enter date of birth to determine age.
Images 2-4: Rollover icon to see it change into its text name. Click your chosen icons and it'll stay that way. If "other" is chosen, pop-up box shows up so you input your info there.

Flash Video Ads

These were done last week, but I haven't been into Blogspot much lately. Here are some storyboards for variations of a banner ad (video ad, flash ad, however you name it).

My mentor suggested I look into other types of online marketing ads. So I did a bit of additional research into the those types. One type of ad that I liked because it attracts attention and is not so annoying is a Comet ad. Click on the "demo".

Sadly, Facebook and MySpace don't allow any other kinds of online ads on their site except Flash banners or a small picture with text beneath (not very designerly).

Burnaby Library Feedback for Website + Sketches

Came across this at the Burnaby Public Library's website. Apparently, they need user feedback for the website testing. Incentive is a free mp3 player in a draw. Similiar to my project, no? Sure, the visual design is lacking, but one can consider their strategic implementation of this event.

1) Stick it on the front page of website. Under "News & Events" there's a link for further info.
2) Details are given.
3) Spread the word to friend.

Alright, their campaign design isn't exciting or glammed (is that a word?) up, but I thought it might be interesting to post. Meanwhile, I have been making a few examples on the variations of a banner ad ( or likewise) which I'll post later. Instead, here's a few ideas on improving my ad. Above, the 3 panels is the storyboard of my current ad and so I try to improve it.

story board of banner ad

Hi, folks!

I instinctively realized that my online survey last week is indeed drab. Sorry for that. I had a plans on a more interactive website with icons, imagery, and flash. But due to time constraints and perhaps some doubts, I quickly put together a sketchy draft-like version = dry and boring, although I did want to keep it clean + simple. Finding out that today's technology is progressing to the point will flashiness is no longer an issue in download time (in most cases anyway), I'm going to continue working on the online survey.

(will add)

Coupons - Vector

Process of coupon. Simple + clean. Started out with white background and wondered how it would look in another color. The coffee cup was converted to all white lines. Will continue to work on it.

Starbucks video + freebie

This was posted up Nov 1 on Youtube by Starbucks (or such). Just came across it today.

3 Iterations in process

From the sketches in the previous blog post, I took these 3 ideas and began to work it up in InDesign as possible approaches. They would be displayed on poster, card insert, etc.

The iteration with the diagrammatic direction path was favoured most by my classmates. So the rest of the class day was to make further iterations of it. I began by making the imagery more simpler and iconic (icon=simple). Instructor said I should focus on imagery because of the risks of mistranslations through words (eg: people with little English skills). Also, the simpler, the easier it is to grasp. Below were some sketches of this simplification:

Sketches for Deliverables

Met up with my mentor on Tuesday morning. He gave me a couple of ideas, for example, card inserts into magazines that people of the 18-20's year old age group might read. 'Course, everybody has different interests like fashion, sports, video games, etc. Also, the idea of taking 'feedback to where they play' which is appealing to the audience of the free services + stuff you can get from the library and meanwhile, giving your feedback there. Example: a poster showing off all the stuff you get free from the library (DVD's, book, magazines, video games) which will entice the viewer to visiting the library and give feedback there while they're at it. Just a atop-off-the head thought.

Below: Various ideas. Most of them you guys have seen in class already and wrote your feedback on it.
